Espresso - The Morning Wake Up Call

July 30, 2008

What is Espresso?

The word espresso comes from the Italian words caffé espresso which literally means pressed-out coffee. Espresso is brewed by forcing very hot water under high pressure through coffee that has been ground to a consistency between extremely fine and powder. This process extracts a very flavorful concentrated coffee beverage. In Italy, good espresso is defined by the “four Ms” – Miscela, Macinazione, Macchina, Mano. These four words loosely translates to: blend of coffee beans, the grinding process, the machine, and the person making the espresso.

Espresso was developed in Milan, Italy in the early 20th century, but up until the mid-1940s it was a beverage produced solely with steam pressure. A simple espresso machine uses a pot, a filter, ground coffee and a spout. The as water in the pot is heated pressure builds inside the pot, and the

only way for it to escape is up the spout, through the coffee and out of the spout in the top. Since the end of the spout is under water, the pressure forces the hot water up through the spout. Modern day espresso machines have really caught on since the invention of the spring piston lever machine. This machines commercial success changed espresso into the beverage we know today. Starbucks has taken espresso production to a new level and the market continues to grow each year.

How does Espresso Differ from Coffee?

So what makes espresso so much different than regular coffee? For starters it has a thicker consistency than standard drip coffee. It also contains a higher amount of dissolved solids than drip coffee per relative volume. And probably the most noticeable thing when you pay $6 bucks is that the serving is much smaller. Espresso is usually measured in shots, which are between 25 and 30 ml (around 1 fluid ounce) in size. Espresso is also chemically complex and somewhat volatile, with many of its chemical components quickly degrading from oxidation or loss of temperature. Just by looking at it, the most distinguishing characteristic is “crema”. Crema is the reddish-brown foam that floats on the surface and is composed of vegetable oils, proteins and sugars. Crema has elements of both emulsion and foam colloid.

Because of the high pressure brewing process, espresso tends to be a very highly concentrated “shot” of coffee. While there can be significant variation, on a per-volume basis, espresso contains approximately three times the caffeine content of regular brewed coffee. In most cases, 1 shot of espresso will have about half the caffeine of a standard large coffee. For this reason, it has become the base ingredient for other drinks, such as lattes, cappuccino, macchiato and mochas.

Which type of coffee beans is used to make espresso?

Contrary to popular belief, there is no specific coffee bean type or roast required to make espresso. Remember, espresso is made from the process, not the bean or blend. Typically, espresso is made from a blend of beans that can be roasted ranging between dark and light. Depending on the consumer, the blend chosen is purely a decision on taste. Commercial espresso makers like Starbucks go with a darker roast of beans to produce their traditional flavor.

What the heck is a Barista?

Barista is the Italian word for bartender. So an expert operator of an espresso machine is considered a barista. Starbucks uses this term to refer to their counter staff and thus the term has gained popularity in the U.S. A “home barista” is one who enjoys making espresso at their home.

A final word on espresso

As more and more Americans pour (no pun intended) into the local Starbucks or the Seattle’s Best coffee shops, the popularity of espresso grows. Owning your own espresso maker has become quite popular in recent years and there are many styles of machines to choose from. Some operate with just the touch of a button. I encourage you to do your research before you buy there are many different options and many different price ranges to consider. Good luck on your quest for the perfect cup of espresso be it home brewed or Starbucks original.

Kitchen Bar Stools

July 30, 2008

Perhaps one of the most used seats in your household is the kitchen bar stool. When one thinks of this item, they may envision a child sitting on it doing homework while mom or dad prepare dinner. Or, perhaps they envision a convenient place to sit after work while having a snack or a drink. They may even see friends sitting on the stools chatting with the person preparing meals or snacks. Kitchen bar stools may even be seen as seats for children at mealtime while adults eat at the dining table. Kitchen bar stools have grown in popularity along with the ever increasing sizes of kitchens and dining areas that are being built with overhanging counters.

There are many different kitchen bar stool designs to choose from to fit your kitchen decor. The right choice of bar stool can add to your kitchen decor while the wrong choice may hinder the overall look of your kitchen. Kitchen bar stools come with or without backs, different heights, swivel or non swivel as well as with or without arms. They also come in wood, metal, wrought iron and other materials. Sometimes, the many different choices can be overwhelming. To help you make the right choice, here are a few tips on choosing the right bar stool for your kitchen.

Kitchen bar stools go through a lot of use. With this in mind, it is wise to choose stools that are made of materials that can stand the test of time and wear. Be sure to avoid stools that are made of soft wood if they are going to be for kitchen use. Instead, you might want to choose stools that are made of wrought iron, hard wood, aluminum, stainless steel or chrome.

For comfort and convenience, it is important that you allow 12 inches from the top of the stool cushion to the bottom of the table or counter. Make sure the tops of the arms of the stools are able to slide under the counter or table easily if you decide on stools with arms.

Along with the stool itself, make sure that the cushions you will be using will stand the test of time as well. Avoid getting thin grade leather or vinyl cushions if choosing leather or vinyl. Bare wood or metal seats will last, but may not be as comfortable as a padded cushion.

Consider the other uses for your kitchen bar stool that may not involve the kitchen. Perhaps they will occasionally be used in the gameroom or TV room when you are entertaining guests. If you are planning to use them elsewhere, be sure to select stools that are light enough to be carried easily from one room to the next.

Kitchen stools are also wonderful additions to kitchens of busy people. They often serve as places to eat when you are on the go; from a quick bite before you leave for work in the morning or when you return for another bite to eat before heading out again. The kitchen bar stool isn’t just for breakfast anymore. It has become a versatile and convenient addition to any kitchen.

Choosing the Right Pool Heater for the Job

July 30, 2008

Having your own private, heated pool is definitely an enjoyable luxury in cooler weather, but if you don’t already have a heating system installed, you’ve first got to decide which system is best for your pool. Usually you’ll be able to choose between an electric, gas, or solar powered heating system, but there are plenty of factors to consider when deciding which is right for your pool, and for you. Each of the three options has some particular advantages and disadvantages.

Electric Heat Pump Systems

Electric systems don’t generate their own heat; instead they use electricity to pump heat to the pool’s heating unit. They work by circulating the pool’s water through a filtration and heating unit. The heater draws air from outside using a fan, and uses a combination of refrigerants, evaporation coils, compressors, and condensers to transfer heat to pool water. Heated water is then returned to the pool.

Electric heat pump systems are very energy-efficient (often more efficient than gas systems), but in certain circumstances lose efficiency very quickly. Most systems operate most efficiently at outside temperatures of more than 45 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but lose efficiency quickly if the temperature decreases. The system will still operate effectively, but it will require more electricity to do so, because the cooler outside temperature forces the system to work harder to heat water.

When choosing an electric system, the size of your pool, your local climate, and when and how you plan to use the heater are all important factors to consider. Efficiency and cost are also important to your budget. The value to watch for is the Coefficient of Performance (COP), which measures the efficiency of electric systems. The higher the COP, the more efficient the system; however because different manufacturers use different efficiency tests, the COP won’t always provide a direct comparison between different systems.

Electric systems are usually more expensive than gas-fired systems. Over time, however, the costs of each will even up somewhat, as electric systems are usually more efficient, and have lower annual operating costs. Properly installed and well maintained, an electric heating system will run smoothly for at least ten years.

Gas-Fired Systems

Gas-fired heating systems have long been a popular choice, despite their inefficiency as compared to electric and solar systems. Newer gas models are much more efficient than their predecessors, but even so they are still at a disadvantage. However, the relative efficiency of each system depends greatly on your local climate, and its suitability depends on your pool use habits, so there are going to be cases where gas is the best option.

Gas systems are perhaps the most simple. They burn natural gas or propane, and heat the pool’s water by drawing water through a filter into the heating unit. The water is heated via proximity to the unit’s combustion chamber.

The beauty of a gas-fired heating system is that water can be heated quickly—much more so than electrical or solar powered systems—and it can be heated regardless of external weather conditions. A gas-fired system can maintain any temperature you desire no matter what the weather. This quality, coupled with the lower efficiency and higher operating cost of the gas system, makes them really ideal for heating a pool which doesn’t see regular use.

To check the efficiency of a gas-fired system, use the ‘heater efficiency’ ratio. This is expressed as a percentage, and refers to the amount of fuel the unit consumes versus the amount that is wasted when heating water. For example, unit operating at 55% heater efficiency uses 55% of the gas it consumes in heating pool water, wasting 45% in the process. On the other hand, a 95% efficient system wastes only 5% of the gas it consumes.

More efficient systems are naturally more expensive, but over the life of the unit, it’ll pay for itself if you use the pool regularly. Choosing a 95% system over a 55% system will save a little over $400 a year. Given that a properly installed and maintained system will last at least five years, you can potentially save more than $2,000 in annual heating costs.

Solar-Powered Systems

Solar heating is an extremely cost-effective method of heating a swimming pool, but the suitability of these systems is heavily dependent on your local climate.

Solar heating systems include four main parts: a pump, a solar collector through which water is circulated, a filter to remove debris from water entering the collector, and a valve which can be manipulated to divert water to the solar collector.

The solar collector itself is a panel (or panels) installed on the home’s roof. Water enters the collector and is heated, then returned to the pool. Depending on the collector being used, it can also heat water used in the home. In addition, in hot climates the system can be used to cool water down by diverting it to the collector at night rather than during the day.

Start-up costs for solar systems are competitive in comparison to gas and electric systems. The real difference in cost is in annual operating costs, where solar heating definitely comes out the winner.

Another advantage is that once installed, they’re relatively simple to maintain, and a well installed and properly maintained solar heating system will usually operate smoothly for at least ten and up to twenty years.

Heating System Installation

Regardless of the type of system you choose, it’s almost always best to hire a professional contractor for installation. It’ll cost extra, of course, but heating systems must be properly installed and configured for maximum efficiency, so it’s an expense that will more or less pay for itself in the long term.

If you choose a solar heating system this is particularly important—a professional contractor is an absolute necessity in this case, as there are additional issues, such as safety and local building codes, to consider during planning and installation. Choose a certified or licensed contractor with experience in working with the type of system you plan to use for the best results.

Don’t forget that your heating system will need annual tune-ups and will probably require servicing periodically, too. Again, it’s usually best to hire a professional for this work to keep the system in tip-top condition.

Basic Smoothie Ingredients

July 30, 2008

When making smoothies you will want to make sure you have some basic ingredients on hand.

With these basic ingredients, a bowl full of fruit, vegetables, and your imagination you will surely come up with some fabulously delicious and original smoothie recipes! The ingredients below is just a short list of some of the basic ingredients used in most smoothie recipes.

Having these ingredients on hand will make creating an experimenting with smoothie making a more pleasant and FUN experience.

Blender – I know this isn’t really an ingredient, but a good blender will really help you in your smoothie making process. So be sure to have a blender on hand before attempting to make a smoothie.

Yogurt – Yogurt is a really great base for all smoothies. It gives it a great texture. Vanilla yogurt goes great with any smoothie, but you can also change it up a bit and keep several different flavors on hand like lemon and strawberry yogurt.

Milk – Using milk in a smoothie is way better than using water. It gives the smoothie more flavor and texture. If you are a vegetarian or lactose intolerant than Soy milk will do. I prefer the vanilla flavored soy milk. My favorite is the 8th continent light vanilla soy milk.

Juice – Orange juice serves a great base for a sweeter smoothie. Apple juice and grape juice can also be used as well. If you are using milk or yogurt as a base, adding a little orange juice can help give it a sweet taste, and could even replace using a sweetener or sugar in your smoothie. Using a tomato juice or another vegetable juice can help add even more nutrition and flavor to your smoothies!

Tofu – Adding a little tofu to a smoothie is a great way to get a low fat, good for you, protein in your diet. Combined with the soy milk you could easily net 6 grams of protein in ONE smoothie. No need to worry about the taste, most of the time the tofu just blends in with the flavors of the smoothie.

Ice – Use ice in your smoothie if you are wanting to make your smoothie thicker. Ice is also great for getting that frothy smoothie texture.

Sweetener & Salt – Using sweetener and a pinch of salt can really make the flavors of your smoothie more distinct. Try to keep the salt to a minimum, only use a pinch of it or to taste - until the flavors stand out and are more distinct.

Honey - Honey is another great way to add a little sweetness to your smoothie.

Fun – Making smoothies is about having fun! Don’t forget to add this special ingredient to every smoothie you make!

When making smoothies, use your imagination and add different kinds of fruits, and even vegetables to your smoothies. Different kinds of nuts like peanuts, cashews, almonds, and walnuts not only add a nice flavor to smoothies but can also be a great way to add protein to your smoothie. Don’t forget things like peanut butter or cashew butter can also be used to make a smoothie!

If you keep these basic smoothie ingredients on hand you will have the freedom to create a unique and yummy smoothie at the drop of a dime.

Home Improvement Energy Savers: Fireplaces

July 30, 2008

There is definitely something elegant and cozy that fireplaces add to almost any home. However, even though they are a great addition, they are also a lot of work.

You see many people don’t take that some important things into consideration when they have fireplaces installed or when they buy a house that has one or more of them. For instance, consider the following points.

Drafts / Heat Loss

If you don’t end up using them, you have to have them covered up. If you don’t do anything at all with them, they can cost you money on your energy bills due to a loss of heat and drafting issues.

If you ignore your fireplaces and are not using them, you may find that you have a draft in the wintertime and that your bills are higher than they need to be. You should always have someone come in to close up your fireplaces if you don’t intend to use them any time soon.

If you think you may use them again in the future, make sure you find someone who can close them up so you may open them again when you wish to start using them again. Some ways of closing up fireplaces are permanent, so make sure you are specific about what you want done.

Maintenance

If you do use fireplaces, they require maintenance. When you actively use your fireplaces, you have to remember to keep them clean. They can be a fire hazard as well, and that means you have to have someone come in to check and clean your chimney at least once a year if not more. You have to keep the ashes cleaned out, and it will add a certain aroma to your home that you may or may not like.

If you don’t mind all of those things, you certainly should have fireplaces and use them if you want to. However, don’t just use them and then ignore the upkeep or you could be putting your home in danger of burning down.

Overall, fireplaces can be great additions to the home, though most only use them once in a while. Safety is an important issue, as many lose their homes to fires because they did not care for them the right way. Always have the number of a good chimney sweep company on hand, and know what to look for if there may be problems. If smoke starts backing up into your home when you use them, you may have blockage that needs to be addressed immediately.

Great Deals on Fireplaces

You don’t even need to leave now to find good deals on fireplaces today. Search online with keywords to describe what you would like at top search engines like MSN.com or Yahoo.com. For example, enter, “brick wood burning fireplace” and even enter your area (city, state) to zero in on the closest for cheaper delivery rates.

Then review sites that turn on in the online engines, comparing not only price, but quality, customer service and professionalism. For instance, does customer service answer the phone when you dial? Or is there no number, only a PO Box?

Check Out a Home Sauna

July 30, 2008

As more and more of us are embracing healthier lifestyles, we begin looking for easier ways to achieve our goal of overall goal of excellent health. For many years, home pools and spas have been all the rage. Why purchase a membership at a health club when you can achieve the same effect in the privacy of your own home? Now, more and more health-conscious people are putting saunas into their homes. Whereas once the idea of a home sauna seemed ludicrous to all but the super-rich, these days many of us of moderate means can afford one.

Home saunas come in one of two varieties: modular or pre-cut. Pre-cut home saunas are a bit more time-consuming in their construction, as they are custom-built for your home’s needs. These saunas can come in all shapes and sizes, depending only on what your specifications are. Pre-cut home sauna kits allow you to convert a single room, or part of a room, into a sauna. The kit provides you with all the wood and accessories you will need for assembly, allowing you to easily attach the assembly to your room’s existing frame. Pre-cut home sauna kits need to be installed over waterproof floors, such as concrete or ceramic tile.

The more common and popular home sauna is the ready-to-assemble modular sauna kit. These home sauna kits are quite a bit easier to assemble than the pre-cut variety, allowing even the novice do-it-yourselfer the opportunity to build their own sauna. They are also great because they are easy to disassemble, allowing you to take them with you when you move. As the name implies, modular home sauna kits come in large pieces, ready for you to assemble. The kit contains wall and ceiling sections, as well as floor panels, benches, a heater, and all the other accessories necessary for your home sauna. They even come partially-wired. As with pre-cut kits, modular kits need to be installed over a waterproof floor.

When installing your home sauna, it is imperative that you exercise caution and observe all safety regulations. Never use any electrical component that is not UL-rated and make sure that all of the circuits are of the correct size. Also, if you need to do any extra wiring not provided for in the kit, make sure that it is done by a qualified electrician, or inspected by one at the very least. The door to the sauna should always open outward and should never have any locks of any kind. Also, the interior surfaces of the sauna should never be treated with any chemicals in any way, since the high heat emitted by the sauna may cause paints and other coatings to give off toxic fumes. Due to the high level of dry heat present in a sauna, you should always consult with your doctor prior to using one, and always follow all of the sauna manufacturer’s specific safety and operating instructions to the letter.

For many of us, we want to live a healthier lifestyle, but we just can’t motivate ourselves to go to a health club and try and get fit. For some, it’s a matter of fearing to work-out in front of others. For others, it’s sheer laziness and lack of motivation. A home sauna may be exactly what you need. Home saunas allow you to sweat at your own pace and start your path to a healthy lifestyle from the comfort of your own home.

About Barbecue Sauce

July 30, 2008

What would grilling or barbecue be without barbecue sauce? Either slowly cooking into the meat in a barbecue, or forming a thick tasty glaze on grilled food, outdoor cooking just would not be the same without a good barbecue sauce.

Barbecue sauces vary from region to region, and from chef to chef. If you go to North Carolina, you’d find a thin, vinegar based sauce, soaking into the thin shreds of pulled pork. In Kansas City, they like their sauce thick and sweet. If you go to Texas, you’ll find a thinner sauce than you’d find in Kansas City, and less sweet.

Barbecue sauces are usually categorized according to their base. Sauces can be based on ketchup, tomato sauce, mustard, vinegar, even mayonnaise. Depending on the base, and the preference of the cook, they can be thick or thin, sweet, sour, spicy, mild, or any combination.

A basic sauce consists of several elements, each adding another layer of flavor and complexity to the sauce. First of all is the base, as stated above, that can be tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard, vinegar, or mayonnaise. Or if you want to experiment, you can try something different. The next element is the sweetener. Usually, this is brown sugar or molasses, but you can also use fruit juice, or any other sweet flavor. The sweetener helps to take the edge of of the next flavor… sour. Lemon juice and lime juice can be added for a sour tang, or vinegar will do the trick. Aromatics, herbs, and spices add another layer of flavor to the barbecue sauce. Onion and garlic are common aromatics.

You can buy sauces at the store. You’ll probably find at least a dozen brands and flavors at your local grocery store. But nothing beats a good homemade barbecue sauce. If you want to create your own barbecue sauce, it isn’t hard. Just choose your base, and the rest of the flavors that you want, and start experimenting. A good barbecue sauce will have a balanced blend of flavors to it, sweet, sour, smoky, spicy. Just add a little bit of each ingredient at a time until you get the blend that you want. You can always add more, but you can’t take away, so just add a little bit at a time. Feel free to experiment with your sauce, people have added coffee, cola, cherries, and other ingredients that you wouldn’t think to find in a barbecue sauce. If you want, you can buy a sauce at the store, and then doctor the sauce with your own additions, to suit your own tastes.

A quick note on storage. You can store the barbecue sauce in a sealed container in your refrigerator for a few days. If you want to keep the sauce longer than that, you’ll need to learn some canning techniques, to sterilize the food and containers, and properly process the sauce.

How you use the barbecue sauce depends a lot on the sauce itself. Most barbecue sauces can be used at the table as a dipping sauce for food. But different types of sauces are used differently in cooking. Thin sauces can be used as a marinade for the meat before grilling, and can also be applied during the cooking proces. Thicker sauces, especially those with a lot of sugar should not be applied to the food until the last few minutes of cooking time, or they could burn. If you are doing a true barbecue, however, cooking the meat slowly for a long time, you can get away with putting some of the sauce on the meat at the beginning of the cooking time, as the lower temperature would be less likely to burn the sauce.

A good outdoor cookout just isn’t the same without a good, flavorful barbecue sauce. Get in the kitchen, and whip up a batch, and brush it on your steaks or chicken for an element of flavor that just screams barbecue.

Understanding No VOC Paint Solutions

July 30, 2008

So I have been hearing a lot about VOCs recently. And not one to shy away from a perfectly confusing acronym, I have been looking into this one and trying to figure out if it warrants all the attention that it’s getting. And guess what? It does. Apparently VOCs are volatile organic compounds–you preferred the acronym, didn’t you? VOCs can occur naturally–trees and cows are huge contributors of VOCs–but the ones that occur naturally can be handled naturally. Funny, isn’t it? Where we get into trouble is when the VOC count gets way too high and when it’s in your home.

Too many VOCs deplete the ozone layer and help create smog and other environmental dangers. Most problematic is when they are in your home where they can adversely affect your family and pets. Low air quality–the EPA says that indoor air can be up to 9 times worse for you than outside–is the main contributor to Sick Building Syndrome. Illnesses such as throat, nose and eye irritations, and even cancer are the results of Sick Building Syndrome and have been linked to VOC and toxins.

So what things contribute to low indoor air quality and what are the alternatives? Paints are one of the huge offenders. Paints and all things to do with paints such as thinners, varnishes and coatings, contain solvents. These solvents house VOCs and other toxins. Remember that new paint smell? Well, those are actually the toxins and VOCs releasing into the air and reducing the quality of your air. The Paint Quality Institute has estimated that the VOCs in traditional paints make up to 10 percent of ozone depleting substances in the United States.

In the last few years paint manufactures have become sensitive to the impact of their products on the health of the consumer and the environment. In an effort to become greener, paint manufacturers have begun work to remove some of the toxic ingredients in their traditional paints to create no VOC paints or low odor paints. Many of these manufacturers are simply creating paint as they are used to doing and then removing the toxins. This is great, but it often creates a less than brilliant product–so we are back to the old problem of do I choose a product that is good for me or is just a good product.

Fortunately, technology is beginning to catch up, and a few manufacturers are creating great paint that is not only super on the walls, but also safe for your family and the planet. A renewed interest in child safe paint (paint that doesn’t contain fumes that will damage your kids basically) has resulted in completely revolutionized products that outperform toxic paints in durability, coverage and can come in any color. So, now you don’t have to sacrifice performance for health. So, when you’re ready to add a splash of something wonderful to your walls do some double-checking.
